Loving Porn Stars

Yes, it’s true. I love porn stars.

So does my wife, and so does our Savior. Actually, let me take that back and phrase it more truthfully, my wife and I are learning to love as Jesus does and He definitely loves porn stars.

I’m not here to criticize porn stars or their directors and agents. I’m not here to condemn any of you who view pornography. I’m not trying to sarcastically slam anyone or anything that has to do with the porn industry. And I’m not here to share a bunch of boring statistics to prove a point. We all know how many of us have been affected by pornography in one way or another. And I’m also not here to share a million and one scripture verses on why we shouldn’t view or participate in pornography and other sexual immorality. We all know porn is sin, (or you do now) and I trust the Spirit of God to convict us if and when we take part in any sexual sin.

So what is the purpose of this little sermon if not to preach against pornography and sexual immorality and the “wicked ways” of porn stars? It’s purpose, I should say my purpose, is to get all of us thinking, inspire us to ‘get real,’ and perhaps motivate some real repentance. No, not to repent of looking at nudity and watching other people have sex, but to repent of the malice in our hearts for those who do, and not only them, but also for those who make money from it.

Think about it. Do you condemn porn stars in your heart, even having never met him or her? Do you damn to hell those millionaires who profit from sinful websites promoting sexual immorality? Do you snicker at your brother for having been caught with a ‘nude’ magazine, or your sister for that ‘nude’ webcam video she made? Then again, perhaps that student who was sexting and sending nude pictures of himself to other students or the female teacher who seduced the boy because he made her feel special- they don’t deserve grace, right? Or maybe it’s the ‘homosexual’ teenager that makes no difference to you, who committed suicide because he just couldn’t cope with “being different” and the bullying from his peers and family. Maybe you have no compassion for the rape victim who also happens to be a prostitute, selling her body to make a profit. Maybe you couldn’t care any less for the pedophile behind bars who molested his niece, or what about the ‘gay’ preacher who left his wife and kids for a life of self-indulgence? Don’t they all deserve to burn in hell, or at least get HIV? For me, I’d say it’s when I hear of a cheating spouse having an affair or one night stand that always gets my indignant flames burning. Then again, don’t we all deserve hell? I do.

What does Jesus have to say about people like us?

To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Luke 18:9-14

Pray for me, and I’ll pray for you. Let’s take a deep look inside ourselves and ask this question, “Am I giving freely the grace that has been given to me so freely?” (Matthew 10:8) Please continue advocating for the victims of sexual crimes, but let us in our fervent passions not forget to love those who are the perpetrators, the ones who “should have seen it coming,” the ones who “chose” their lifestyle, and the ones who are lost without the Savior. We would all be lost without Jesus, we were all once headed down the back alleys toward hell. Maybe we can change the world by letting people know Jesus loves them and so do we, instead of preaching against their wicked ways with such judgmental megaphones and “Christian” protests and media attention. We all have an ear for drama, don’t we? I think it’s time the Church lays down our megaphones and spotlights and cell phones and prayer chains too for that matter (the kind more of a gossip train than of compassionate concern), and share the grace and love of the Lord Jesus Christ with our hands, our feet, and our hearts. Let us lay our love for drama, our security in zealous piety, and our own quiet self-righteousness down at the altar, pick up the bowl of water and washcloth Jesus provided, and go out into the street corners and soup kitchens and the prison cells and the public schools and the red light districts and the back of our sanctuaries and beginning in our own homes, wash the feet of those who are truly ‘ragamuffin’ – the brokenhearted, condemned, humiliated, imperfect and forgotten, but most of all… loved, loved by our Abba and His Son, and if favoritism were in Their character, these would assuredly top the list.

If you are viewing pornography or profiting from pornography, or struggle with any manner of sexual sin or idolatry, or struggle with a personal identity crisis… we suggest getting real with God, accepting His mercy and unconditional love, and talking with another follower of Jesus, perhaps a leader. Email us and we’ll pray with you in complete confidentiality. We recommend the following link as a resource for recovery and prevention as well: xxxchurch.com – But Kathy and I also want to emphatically declare that we love you, we are no better than you, and we ALL need Jesus.

“Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians 4:31-32

Graciously,
Richie

I love this! I absolutely love it. Being rather maverick myself, I particularly love that I would not have started with porn stars, but rather strippers…just to be on the safer side. SO I LOVE IT EVEN MORE that its gutsier than I would have been!
