I love the song, ‘Good Time’ by Owl City. It’s not only great music with fun lyrics, but it clicks something inside me. At first, I hesitated writing about this because I thought to myself, “Does this song have anything to do with how the world often has a good time: sex, drugs, crazy spending, etc.?” But I realized it doesn’t imply that at all. Friends can get together and have a good time. Family can get together and have a good time. Christians should know how to have a good time!
Christ our Savior knows how to enjoy a party and have a good time. He turned barrels of water into wine for a wedding in Cana of Galilee. He went to the home of a tax collector for dinner with friends and ended up having His feet washed as well. He had crowds follow Him nearly everywhere, sometimes 5-10,000 people. He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey in parade style while people waved palm branches.
Too often we think of our Lord as austere and maybe even grumpy. But though Jesus is serious about certain things like salvation, repentance, and love… He also wants us to enjoy one another and be glad. It’s no bad thing to have a good time! The most reiterated command in the Bible is to sing! It tells us to rejoice. It tells us to be thankful. It tells us to dance and shout! It tells us to play our instruments and make music. It also tells us that a joyful heart is like good medicine!
My friends, we need to show the world what it means to have a good time. When I hear this song by Owl City, what clicks on in me is the desire to rejoice, to laugh, to enjoy God’s love and those people He’s placed in my life that love me. Throw a party with a bonfire, grab a guitar, and roast marshmallows. Celebrate the gift of Christ by exchanging gifts around the Christmas tree with friends and family. Get a little loose at your worship service and don’t be afraid to praise the Lord with your whole heart. Even today, have cheerful attitude and revel in the love of God.
Will you join me today? Will you give your burdens to the Lord and make a joyful noise? With Jesus in your life it’s always a good time!
Psalm 33:3, “Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.”
Zephaniah 3:17, “The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”
